Overview:

Inspired by the unique requirements of different markets and made possible by our large population size, DGI has developed three unique purebred Duroc subpopulations that emphasize specific economically important traits - a line the emphasizes % lean, a line that emphasizes growth rate / meat quality, and our largest subpopulation, the DGI Standard Line which emphasizes growth rate, % lean, loin eye area, and loin eye depth. In taking this proactive approach, DGI offers diverse terminal sire lines with real genetic differences within the Duroc breed, without jeopardizing the inherent superiority of the DGI Duroc's reputation for lean growth and meat quality. These specialized lines allow DGI the flexibility to meet specific product requirements for the pork industry and to provide specific lines that complement or combine well with the various female genotypes used in the industry.

The DGI Duroc, as a terminal sire, is becoming increasingly popular as producers recognize the benefits of using unrelated terminal sires in their operations to maximize heterosis potential, cross breeding benefits, and production efficiencies. Furthermore, DGI Duroc offspring excel in appetite and growth rate, while exhibiting more product uniformity and superior meat quality traits.

Adding to the DGI Duroc's popularity has been the realization that profitability is not a function of percent lean alone. Lagging throughput, associated with poor average daily gains and high variation in the grower and finisher stages, are forcing producers to evaluate other genetic sources. The DGI Duroc, and each of its subpopulations can meet producers' expectations for improved appetite, growth rate, feed efficiency, and full value pigs - traits that are now becoming more apparent as necessary requirements for profitable swine production. DGI's emphasis on average daily gain (ADG), full value pigs, and meat quality truly distinguish our genetic improvement program and in turn, our product from other companies' sire lines.
